Merry Christmas!

Monday evening was magical! Thank you so much for taking the time to bring your children back to school for them to share in the magic of this season. Everyone looked so beautiful and handsome, and they did a fantastic job singing.

Our Tiger Pride Assembly last week had a different twist. There was the awarding of the honor apples, and then there was the prize drawings from the fundraiser. Here are the students who earned an honor apple in November:
Improvement: Lucas and Anjelo
Team Work: Evan and Abby
Character: Charlie and Mari
Academics: Brennen and Keyandra
Congratulations to these students! And remember, everyone can earn an Honor Apple so keep working hard.

These students were able (because of how much cookie dough they sold for our fund raiser) to choose an envelop with money in it: Angelica, Charlie, Mari, and Quentin. The envelopes had various amounts of money. It was a fun event to watch. I wonder what they spent their money on? :)

Our economics unit is going great! The students are busy earning money this month and trying to keep it so they can spend it on items at our class store next Wednesday. Some of the students have quite a bit of money. Ask your child how much money they have.

Next Friday is our school wide Christmas party. First grade is having our party at the same time as the Kindergarten like we did for the Fall party. Our time will be 9:30-10:45. Everyone is welcome to come. If you would like to come help at a station, or help by sending in supplies, please let me know and I will get you in contact with our room mom, Amanda Givens. This day, we will also have a school wide pajama day and we will be watching Polar Express and having hot chocolate. It should be a fun day!

Don't forget, we have our winter vacation starting Monday, Dec. 21 and going until Friday, Jan. 1st. We will come back to school on Monday, January 4th.

We are Thankful for So Much

Long Ago and Today: We have just finished up our November Social Studies unit. We compared and contrasted times long ago with today. We learned about the Pilgrims and the Indians and the struggles they faced during that time. We had fun and learned a lot during this unit. We also decided we have much to be thankful for; our lives are much easier than in times long ago.

Thankful Quilt: During November, we also worked on making a Thankful Quilt. This amazing quilt is hanging outside our classroom. We used our writing skills to write about what we are thankful for. We also used our math skills to design our very own quilt blocks. Then we worked together as a team to "sew" our quilt together. This was a big project that we are proud of.

Penny Drive for Holiday Baskets: The school has just completed a penny drive to raise money for Holiday Baskets to help many families within our school. Because of your generosity, we were able to raise over $1100! Thank you so much for all of your support!

Mark Your Calendars: There are several important dates coming up.
December 7th - Holiday Music Program - 6:30-7:30pm. This is an evening for the whole
school to come together to celebrate the Holiday season. Each grade level will
have songs to sing. Plus, there will be trees decorated with ornaments made
by the children. You will be able to remove your child's ornament to take
home (donations for the ornaments will gladly be accepted).
December 9th - November's Tiger Pride Assembly - 2:30pm
December 21-January 1 - Winter Holiday Break
January 6th - December Tiger Pride Assembly - 2:30pm

Morning Times - Mrs. Bishop has asked us to remind parents that the earliest students are able to enter the building in the morning is 8:15 (unless they are eating breakfast, 8:05). Thank you.

Recess - Since we are beginning to see some winter weather, please remember to send your child to school in a coat appropriate for the temperature/wind chill at around noon. We go to recess after lunch, and it hasn't usually hit the high temperature of the day by this point. We will go outside if the temperature is 32 degrees or above (wind chill of at least 25 degrees). We want the children to be able to enjoy recess. Thanks.

Economics Unit - We will be beginning our Economic unit after Thanksgiving break. In this unit, we will be learning about needs/wants, goods/services, scarcity/demand, and producers/consumers. The students will get paid each day for coming to work/school; and they will be able to earn bonuses for extra effort/behavior (along with fines enforced for late work or problems with behavior). At the end of the month, we will finish up our economics unit with a class store. The children will be able to spend the money they have earned on goods and services. This is always a fun way to learn economic terms and practice identifying and counting coins.

Spelling Update - There is a slight change to the way we will be doing spelling for the rest of the school year. We will still have a list of spelling words that will be introduced with our Word Preview paper (and the list sent home), but this will not necessarily be a weekly list with the test always being on Friday. The 1st grade teachers have decided in order to teach these words more thoroughly, we need more time for most of the list of words. From now on, we will begin a new list with the Word Preview, then spend as many days as we feel needed to do word work activities for the words in the list, and then give the written test. As parents, you can help us by just continuing to have your child practice the same list of words until they come home with a new list. Here is the next list of words (we will begin it on Monday): want, was, some, said, do, doing.

Apple Awards

Here are the winners of the Apple Awards mentioned in the next entry. These are the awards earned each month and recognized at the Tiger Pride Assembly.

The Apples for Academics went to: Ashlin and R.J.
The Apples for Improvement went to: Kaylee and Blaine
The Apples for Teamwork went to: Taylor and Oscar
The Apples for Character (Responsiblity) went to: Hailey and Quentin

Congratulations to all of the students who earned an Apple Award for October!! You worked hard for this. Everyone else, keep working hard!

One other news item, Mrs. Bishop has asked for us to remind parents to use the parking lot if you are going to be getting out of your car or parking for a minute or two; but use the parent drop off lane if you are just letting your child out of the car (in the morning) or in the car (in the afternoon). This will help with the traffic flow. Thanks for you help.

New Calendar Dates

We had a wonderful Fall Party on October 26th. Mrs. Bishop is working hard to blend 4 elementary school building traditions together, but at the same time establish new WOHE traditions. She asked the teachers if we would like to try a new version of the classroom parties. With this version, we all celebrated together. Kindergarten and first grade all joined together to rotate through games and craft activities in the commons area. The children all seemed to have a great time. I would like to thank all the parents who sent in items and/or came to our party. I would like to give a big thank you to Amanda Givens who organized our part of the party. Be watching for news of our Winter Party which will be here before we know it.

We also had a great turn out for Parent-Teacher Conferences. Thank you so much for bringing your child and allowing me to share with you all the great things your child is doing. What a great way to show your child his/her education is important!

Another new activity at WOHE is the monthly awards/recognition assembly called The Tiger Pride assembly. We are now on a roll with these assemblies. Plan on each month on the first Wednesday to join us at 2:30 for this assembly. We have several monthly awards we will give out each month along with anything special for that month. One of those awards is the "Apple". There are four different apple categories in which children can earn an apple: academics, improvement, character, and teamwork. For the month of October, I awarded 8 children an apple award. Please check the above blog entry to see who earned the first apple awards (sorry, I am writing this entry at home and I am afraid I might not remember correctly, so I will add to this tomorrow when I get to school :)). Parents are definitely welcome to come to our Tiger Pride assemblies. We love to celebrate the successes of our students!

Upcoming Dates/Events:
Thursday, November 12 - Picture retakes. If you missed the first picture day and would like to
have retakes, let me know so I can send the form home.
November 13 - H1N1 vaccinations (you MUST call the office to set up an appointment)
November 25-29 Thanksgiving Vacation (Enjoy your family)
December 2 - Tiger Pride Assembly at 2:30
December 7 - WOHE's first Holiday Program (be watching for more details, but mark your
calendar for an evening of songs and child made ornaments to purchase. Each class
will be a part of this enjoyable evening.)

My New WOHE Blog

Finally, I have updated my blog to represent our new and wonderful WOHE School! Thank you for being patient with me. I never dreamed of all the little things you don't think about with opening a new school. It has been exciting, but it is also taking longer than I would like for me to feel settled and organized :) I guess it is just like when we move into a new house. We always think we will never be totally unpacked and settled in! Anyway, thank you for being patient with me.

I do like to use this blog spot and email as communication tools. I know how busy everyone is and it is not always easy to make or receive a phone call in the evenings. I also know that since we are all busy, it is not always easy to check a website daily for any new announcements. So, with that in mind, anytime I update this blog with any new information, I will send out a quick email letting you know there is something new you might want to look at.

I will also begin to post my newsletter to the blog. I will still, at this point, send a paper copy of the newsletter, but I am hoping to get things working so smoothly that I don't need to send out a paper copy (unless of course you don't have access to a computer).

Now for the news:
Conference Schedule - I have been working on our schedule. I believe I have received a time preference from most families, so I will be sending home an email letting you know what your exact time is. Please let me know if the time I give you doesn't work for you.

Homework - Each child was asked to check for smoke alarms in their house this week. We are discussing fire safety and I know first hand how important it is to have working smoke alarms in your house. The children will probably come home and tell you that my house burnt. Yes, it did. About 16 years ago, I had a total loss house fire; and if it wasn't for our smoke alarm, my son, Zach, and I wouldn't be here. I would very much request that you check your smoke alarms to make sure they are working and if you are in need of new smoke alarms, please contact the Willard Fire Department. They should be able to help you.

Again, thank you for your patience with things so far this year, I am truely enjoying each and every one of your children!

Lots of Information!

It is the end of the school year and there are lots of things happening:

ADDITION BANANA SPLIT CHALLENGE!!
I have scheduled our banana split celebration for next Tuesday or Wednesday. We have passed all of our tests and the children are very excited! Thank you for working with your child at home on addition and subtraction accuracy and fluency. This is also a great thing to continue working on over the summer to prepare for 2nd grade! All of the items have been spoken for. Thank you for helping supply the items. The kids can’t wait, and have been working so hard toward this goal!

READING CELEBRATION!
We are only 7 reading records away from our last reading celebration of the year. The students have challenged each other to bring in one reading record a piece on Monday! Please help remind your child to read and record the books this weekend. And, don’t forget to continue reading over the summer. The children have worked so hard on their reading skills, we don’t want them to slide back over the summer.

Last Day of School
Please notice that our last day of school, May 22nd, is an early-out day. School will be dismissed at 12:30 that day. Also remember your child will need to bring a sack lunch and a drink for our school-wide end of year picnic on the 22nd! We have had an amazing school year and I can’t believe it is almost over! Please plan on coming around 11:15ish, if you are available, to eat lunch with us before we leave for the summer.

TIGER PRIDE ASSEMBLY
Join us for our end of the year tiger pride assembly next Thursday, May 21st at 2:30. Hope to see you there!

REPORT CARDS
Please make sure that your child has returned all library books and payed all lunch fines so that I will be able to send home their progress reports on the last day of school. I know that you will be pleased with the progress your child has made!

Wind, wind, and more wind :-)

We have had just a little bit of wind lately :), but we have managed to make the best of it! I wanted to take just a moment to brag on your children. First of all, last Friday was an interesting day to say the least, but all of the children handled it exceptionally well! I was very proud of them. Secondly, today's field day and picnic was just a little windy also; we had fun looking hair, chilly arms, and had to chase our food, but the children once again made me proud. Everyone just focused on having fun and didn't worry about who did the best. It was a great day! Thanks again for sending me such wonderful children this year!!!

Now for the news:

Addititon Banana Split Challenge:
We are getting very excited about our banana splits. So far, we have earned a bowl, spoon, a banana, 2 scoops of ice cream, chocolate topping, and sprinkles. We are trying today for our second flavor of topping; and then we will work for whipped cream and a cherry. The students are doing very well on the test. We have only had to take one test over the second time. Thank you to all that have volunteered to bring in supplies, also. I believe we have everything spoken for except the two toppings. I very much appreciate everyone's willingness to help.

Puppets:
We are going to bring our field trip to life! We saw how to make many different kinds of puppets on our field trip; now we are hoping to make puppets next week, write puppet scripts for them, and then perform our scripts in class. It will be a fun way to use our writing and reading skills we have worked so hard on this year.

ASK YOUR CHILD ABOUT…

Comparing and contrasting two Goldiocks stories and the characters in Frederick, adding 2-digit numbers, working on our addition banana split challenge, our last reading celebration (we are only 16 reading records away), our walking field trip to the high school to watch a drama production.

Have a great rest of the week!

Wow! The year is quickly winding down!

Last Friday
Last Friday was a very eventful day with Hats on for Community Service, Tiger Pride Assembly, and of course the East Extravaganza! Thank you to all of you that came out to support our school!
Walking Field Trip
We will be walking to the High School on Wednesday, May 6th to see a production by the theater department. Please make sure to have your child wear tennis shoes on this day and dress for the weather
Field Day
Field Day is on Tuesday, May 12 (rain date of the 19th). Here are a few thoughts and reminders:
*Wear tennis shoes and play clothes.
*Our time is 9:00-11:00
*Bring a jacket if the morning is chilly.
*You can send a change of clothes if you think your child might like the water games :)
*Let me know if you would like Coach Wise to put you to work. She does still need volunteers!
*We will have a picnic lunch, so each child needs to bring a lunch and a drink from home.
*Think about applying sunscreen before you send your child to school.

Banana Split Math
Our banana split addition tests are going very well. So far we have earned: a bowl, a spoon, a banana, and sprinkles. We took our test for the first scoop of ice cream today (I haven’t had a chance to check them yet).

If you would like to help out with supplies, just let me know. So far, I have cherries and sprinkles donated. We will be eating our banana splits during the last week of school.

Reading Celebration
Our goal is to have 1 more reading goal celebration before the end of the year. We need 220 more books (or 22 more reading records) to meet this goal. Please keep reading at home!

Ask your child about:

Picture walks and connections, “What a Shame!”, subtraction strategies, and animal and plant habitats.

Counseling Survey

Dear Parents,

The State of Missouri Department of Education requires each district to do a counseling survey every 3 years. There is a link, for parents, to get to the survey on our schools home page. Just complete the teacher/parent survey. It will only take 5-10 minutes, very short!! You will be recieving a letter from Mrs. Woodall explaining this survey.

Thank you.

Our Field Trip is Coming!

Field Trip

Just a reminder, tomorrow (Friday 17th) is our 1st grade field trip to the puppet theater in Marshfield. We will have a picnic at the park afterwards, so dress your child appropriately. Also remember to send your child with a lunch and a drink unless you signed up to purchase a sack lunch from school. Finally, don’t be late to school :) We are planning on leaving around 9:00 to go have a wonderful time learning about puppets!

Happy Easter!

Clarification

I had a mistake on the April Helper calendar that came home at the first of the month. I listed our snow make up day and our day off incorrectly. We will not have school tomorrow, Friday, April 10; but we do have school on Monday, April 13th. Sorry for any confusion.

EAST EXTRAVAGANZA IS COMING…

Mark your calendars now for this family event that always proves to be a lot of fun! Join us on May 1st for dinner, a student art show, 4th grade STOMP performance and more! Of course the highlights of the evening will be the BOX TOP CHALLENGE and the BASKET AUCTIONS! The book fair will be open in the library as well! Be on the look out for more details to come soon.

Don’t Forget…

Field trip permission slips were due today. If you haven’t sent your child’s yet, please send it on Monday.

Ask your child about….

Our fun partner day, The MAP Cheer, writing encouraging notes to Mrs. Hall’s 4th grade class for the MAP test, the /ch/ sound, how good readers wonder about things while they are reading, measuring, finding the perimeter, what the area measures, weighing with scales, finding how much something holds, sinking and floating, and thermometers.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Counting coins up to 50 cents, the list of sight words, reading fluently, asking and answering questions after a book is read.
Enjoy the 3 day Easter weekend. Don't eat too many jelly beans!!

Big News

Fiddler, No, Principal On the Roof

Mrs. Miller has set Friday, April 24 as the day she will sit on the roof reading with purple hair. The last money amount I heard from the Read-a-Thon was $5300. Great Job! Plan on stopping by the school on the 24th to wave at Mrs. Miller.

End of the Year

As we get close to the end of the year, we are really working hard on reading fluently, comprehending what we are reading, writing sequenced stories , using capitals and punctuation correctly, adding and subtracting quickly, counting money, and understanding the calendar. Thank you as always for all the extra help and practice you give your child at home. If we all work together, great things happen.

Ask your child about...

Measuring with blocks, paper clips, inches, and feet, what we did with the 3 types of matter, the Tiger Pride assembly, taking turns adding onto our book retelling (hoping not to be the last name called), beginning to write our sequence story all about spring break, our poem "What Can You Do?", the sounds -er, -ir, -ur, -ar, and -or make.

Welcome Back

Welcome back from Spring Break!! I hope you had a restful and enjoyable week. This week: In math--we will begin our measurement unit; we will begin by measuring with non-standard units and then switch to standard inches and centimeters. In reading--we will be focusing on giving detailed and sequenced retellings of the books we read. This is an important component of reading comprehension. In writing--we will plan and write sequenced stories with a beginning, middle, and end. We will focus on correct capitalization and punctuation. In science--we will continue our discussions from our Monday All Science Day. We will discuss and experiment with the 3 phases of matter. It looks to be a busy week.

Reminders:

March 11, 2009

Dear Parents,

Just a reminder that Read-a-thon packets are due by Friday. The child who turns in the most money for Read-a-thon will get to have pizza with Principal Miller. The child who read the most minutes will earn a Sonic lunch in the room with me next Monday. Remember to turn in your packets! We want to put Mrs. Miller on the roof by making at least $4000 as a school!

Report cards will go home tomorrow. I will be here for conferences next Thursday evening (19th). If you would like to have a conference, but have not yet requested one, give me a call or send me an email. I still have available times and would be happy to visit with you.

Next Tuesday, March 17th is our 1st grade music program. We will perform a school program at 2:30 and then for the parents at 7:00. Please have your child to my class room at 6:45. At that time, you may go find yourself a seat in the gym. (If you would like to arrive earlier in order to get a good seat, I ask that you keep your child with you until 6:45. I will not be in my room until 6:45, so the children will be unattended if you send them earlier.) I will watch the class until time for the program and take them down to the multi-purpose room for you. All of the children are supposed to wear their green Willard East t-shirt for our programs. That will work perfectly for St. Patrick’s Day!

Have a great rest of the week!

Your partner in education,
Mrs. Newman

Ask your child about: "talking about books", reading our Kirsten books, naming the coins and telling how much each is worth, counting coins (pennies, nickels, and dimes) together, writing the very exciting fiction stories for Mrs. Newman to read at home in her jammies and slippers :), what sound double letters make in a word, our new spelling dictionaries, and telling time to the hour and half hour.

Read-A-Thon
Information is coming home today about The Willard East Read-A-Thon. This is our spring fund raiser. The school goal is to raise $4,000 by just getting pledges and reading! The 1st grader’s goal is 200 minutes of reading over a 7 day period. We will be reading at school also and those minutes will count towards the total minutes. Even though we read all day long at school, we will only be counting the children’s independent reading time and the end of the day chapter book read aloud time. This will average around 30 minutes each day or around 150 minutes of school reading time. This only leaves 50 minutes of reading time for the students to earn at home (you may certainly read more). We are hoping that each child in our class will be able to reach the goal of 200 minutes! So, begin reading and recording minutes, and collecting pledges. You have until the 13th to get your records and money turned in. As an extra incentive, I will be eating a Sonic lunch on Monday the 16th with the student from our class who reads the largest amount of minutes (not who collects the most money) during our read-a-thon. Thank you for helping us out!

Field Trip
The 1st grade will be taking a field trip to a puppet theater on April 17th. Permission slips and more information will be coming soon. We just wanted to let parents know ahead of time that, due to the set up of the theater, we will not be needing adult chaperones. We didn’t want you to be saving a vacation day and then be disappointed (however, you could save it instead for our Field Day Activities in May)

Ask Your Child About:
Our new chapter book, our animal writing projects, editing and revising during writing, place value in numbers (hundreds, tens, and ones), what number comes before or after another, putting numbers in order from least to greatest (ie. 13, 43, 89), counting by 2’s to 50, and On Top of Spaghetti.

Happy Valentine's Day

We have had a fun "Almost" Valentine's Day at school. We had a great party! Thank you to all the moms who sent items and/or came to help; and a big thank you to Mrs. White for coordinating all of our parties this year.

I have an exciting opportunity to tell you about. The teachers of Willard East have decided to try something new this year. We will be offering spring parent-teacher conferences in a couple of weeks to discuss your child's progress and any concerns or questions you may have. You may request a conference with me or I may request a conference with you. The teachers will be individually selecting a night to hold our conferences. I have chosen March 19th as the night I will be available to have a conference with those that would like it. Here are the times I have available.

Valentine's Day is coming!

February is a month of friendship and fun. We will be having our Valentine's Day party at school on Friday the 13th (oohh). We are going to have a lunch time party. We will begin our party at 11:00 with a craft or game activity, then at 11:30 we will eat pizza in the room. As always, all parents are invited (however, to help in the pizza ordering, I am asking the parents to not expect to eat pizza). We are asking each child to bring in $2 to help with the cost of the pizza. We will also, of course, be passing out Valentine cards to our friends. Each child can decorate a box or bag to collect their cards in. You may get as involved and creative as you and your child would like. I am asking that the boxes not be brought in until the day of the party. We just don't have space in the room to store these. And finally, each child should make, or purchase, cards to pass out to their friends. I have included a list of first name here in the website and I will also be sending home a list. I ask that your child does the work of writing the names on the cards. This is good handwriting practice (and we have a small class this year).

Class List: Braden, Brandon, Darrell, Jacob, Katie, Matti, Neely, Nicholas, Paige, Paul, Savanah, Taylor, Wyatt

GREAT JOB: I want to take just a moment to brag on the students. We are just about to meet our 6th reading goal this year. I am so impressed with all of the reading that you and your child are doing at home!! It is not just a couple students who are bring in the reading records for us to get to our goals. It is just about everyone. During the last few weeks, I have had reading records brought in from 11 of the 13 children!! Thank you so much for helping at home!!!!!! I appreciate it and I know your child does. :)
